The future of the last-mile delivery is micromobility.<\/p>    <p>Since the pandemic began, fast delivery services have become essential to our daily lives. And with growing urbanisation, city deliveries are expected to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/press\/2020\/01\/urban-deliveries-expected-to-add-11-minutes-to-daily-commute-and-increase-carbon-emissions-by-30-until-2030-without-effective-intervention-e3141b32fa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">grow 78% by 2030<\/a>. Contributing to a 30% increase in greenhouse gas emissions in our cities. If we don\u2019t do anything about it.<\/p>    <p>Luckily, alternatives are already available. Cargo bikes, scooters, drones and even robots all operate on electricity and present an opportunity to cut congestion and CO<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;emissions big time. But how much exactly?<\/p>    <p>To demonstrate the benefits of micromobility, we chose an e-cargo bike, an electric car and a petrol car to compare the lifetime CO<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;emissions over 200 000 km.<\/p>    <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Comparing CO<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;emissions: cars vs cargo bikes<\/h2>    <p>The graph above shows CO<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;from the production, materials, battery, use phase and recycling. For all vehicles, the most significant contributor to CO<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;is the use phase \u2013 whether it is the petrol or electricity that makes it move. The lifetime CO<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;emissions amounted to 57.5 tons for a petrol-powered car, 50.5 tons for an electric car and 3 tons for an electric cargo bike.<\/p>    <figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/ef27c8e87c.testlink.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/IMG_3790-Edit_L-edited-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Vok e-cargo bike and Tuul e-scooter\" class=\"wp-image-733\" srcset=\"https:\/\/vokbikes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/IMG_3790-Edit_L-edited-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/vokbikes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/IMG_3790-Edit_L-edited-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/vokbikes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/IMG_3790-Edit_L-edited-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/vokbikes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/IMG_3790-Edit_L-edited.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Vok e-cargo bikes and Tuul e-scooters<\/figcaption><\/figure>    <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Biggest contributors to cutting emissions<\/h2>    <p>Probably the biggest surprise is that the savings from an electric car are not that significant compared to a petrol car. While in the use phase, the electric car emits about half of the CO<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;that a petrol car would,&nbsp;<strong>the major CO<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;contributors there are the production, materials and battery<\/strong>. Resulting in 7 tons of CO<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;savings over a lifecycle of 200 000 km compared to a combustion-engined car. Of course, the longer the car is used, the bigger the difference in savings becomes.<\/p>    <p>Another clear conclusion is that&nbsp;<strong>the vehicle\u2019s size is the most substantial contributor to CO<sub>2<\/sub><\/strong>. While cars on average weigh about 2 tons, the cargo bike is 14x less \u2013 only 150 kg. The weight difference contributes to less energy consumption in the production and use phase \u2013 because there is 14 times less mass to build and carry around. Thus, the vehicle uses less energy; the wear on tyres and brake pads is lower, resulting in fewer emissions.<\/p>    <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">95% less CO<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;emissions per lifecycle<\/h2>    <p>We also need to clarify \u2013 electric cargo bikes are not carbon neutral. They create emissions in the production phase, and use phase \u2013 electricity, the wear on brakes and tyres contribute to emissions. However, the difference in emissions is mindblowing.&nbsp;<strong>Compared to a petrol-powered car, the e-cargo bike emits 94.8%<\/strong>&nbsp;(i.e. 54.5 tons)&nbsp;<strong>less CO<sub>2<\/sub><\/strong>; and compared to an&nbsp;<strong>electric car<\/strong>, the&nbsp;<strong>savings are 94%<\/strong>&nbsp;(i.e. 47.5 tons) over a lifecycle.&nbsp;<\/p>    <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cutting emissions \u2013 which vehicle to choose?<\/h2>    <p>When it comes to cutting congestion and CO<sub>2<\/sub>, cargo bikes and other micromobility vehicles are the clear winning choice over cars.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurobike.com\/en\/program-highlights\/conferences\/cccbp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Research<\/a>&nbsp;shows&nbsp;<strong>cargo bikes have the potential to replace 32% of delivery, 50% of service trips<\/strong>&nbsp;and up to&nbsp;<strong>80% of private car trips&nbsp;<\/strong>in urban areas. The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bike-eu.com\/43252\/european-commission-commits-to-stronger-role-in-cycling-promotion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">EU<\/a>&nbsp;sees cycling as a viable option to cut traffic jams and make cities more livable and thus has committed to promoting cycling through policy, infrastructure and subsidies.<\/p>    <p>Moreover, calculations show that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/last-mile-delivery-shipping-explained?r=AU&amp&IR=T\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">53% of delivery costs<\/a>&nbsp;are associated with the last mile; thus, cutting last mile costs presents a significant opportunity for savings for operators.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/electricbikereport.com\/ebike-news-dhl-cubicycle-more-bikes-than-cars-expo-highlights-video-cam-light-more-videos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">John Pearson, CEO at DHL Express Europe, said<\/a>: \u201cBicycles offer a number of advantages in express delivery operations: they can bypass traffic congestion and make up to two times as many stops per hour than a delivery vehicle.&nbsp;<strong>The total cost of ownership over their lifetime is less than half of a van.<\/strong>\u201d Take a closer look at the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/vokbikes.com\/articles\/cost-comparison-ecargo-bike-vs-car\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cost calculations comparing a petrol car and an e-cargo bike<\/a>&nbsp;for more reasons to make the switch.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Have you heard already?
